King Charles III Played Cello!
Did you know that, in his younger days, King Charles played cello? As a student he played in the orchestra at Trinity College Cambridge. While remaining an avid lover of the arts, he looks back on himself as 'hopeless' at the cello. His career certainly took a different turn. 'When I joined the Navy, I found it wasn't so easy to take a cello in a ship,' he admitted. 'It got abandoned for a bit, and I never managed to take it up again.'
Made by William Forster in 1804, his instrument is now in the collection of the Royal College of Music. A current student, Marion Portelance, played the cello in a string quartet during the coronation celebration. The King serves in the honorary role of President of the Royal College of Music.
Remembering Madeline Foley
In her day, Madeline Foley (1923-1982) was an influential American cellist. She studied for several years with Pablo Casals, and her 1950 recital at NY's Town Hall garnered critical praise. She participated in the Marlboro festival for almost 20 years, until her untimely death at the age of 59. Her chamber music colleagues there got used to her occasional gruffness, appreciating that it reflected her firm conviction that a musician must serve the composer with honesty and sensitivity.
The Marlboro Music Festival recently dug into its archives to share rich details about the
life and performances of this important artist. https://www.marlboromusic.org/archives/blog/madeline-foley/
Lend a Hand!
The Kindler Cello Society has great opportunities for volunteers. Want to help organize an event? We hold occasional play-ins at Glen Echo Park. We've been thinking about a program remembering John Martin, who led the National Symphony cello section for five decades. We could also use some help with publicity, graphic design, and compiling news. Most tasks require only a few hours or a few days. Helping out provides much gratification! Dear Friends, February 1, 2023
The Kindler Cello Society of Washington is returning after an extended fermata. (You might recall that the Italian word for fermata is corona.) We hope you enjoyed cello-centric virtual experiences during the depths of the pandemic. As in-person events now resume, the Kindler Cello Society will be there for you. Watch this space for future exciting plans. Please let me know if you’d like to lend a hand with any programs, communications, or other tasks. We can use volunteers who have even just a few hours!
In the meanwhile, I’d like to draw your attention to some awesome area concerts coming up in the early fall. Note especially the recital on November 3rd at the Library of Congress. Sponsored by the Library’s Kindler Fund, Turkish-born cellist Jamal Aliyev will play with pianist Fazil Say. Free tickets remain available online!
If you have events or other announcements you would like to share, please send details along to Ann Franke, at [email protected].
Looking forward to seeing everyone this season,
John

Natasha Jaffe is a Berlin-based indie-classical cellist and composer and released her new album 'Cello in Bloom' in August, which features original and modern music for cello ensembles from cello solo with a loop pedal to cello trios, quartets, and quintets.
In an effort to contribute to the community of cellists, she's made all of the sheet music available for purchase so that ensembles of different sizes, ages, and levels can feel inspired to play music that sounds modern, indie, and is fun to play and listen to.
You can listen to the full album here: https://natashajaffe.bandcamp.com/album/cello-in-bloom and purchase the sheet music for this and the other songs at: https://www.natashajaffe.com/sheet-music.html.
She has also made the music to her trio, "When the Sun Comes", available to a limited number of KCS members. If you are a KCS member and you have an interest in these parts, please send an email via the CONTACT tab.

We had a special guest to direct our cello choir this time, James Jacobs, who is familiar to some of you as a radio host on classical WETA, but whose experience with cello choirs goes back to his youth in the San Francisco Bay Area where he studied cello with Milly Rosner and Colin Hampton. He selected some great music from his own collection of cello choir arrangements by his two teachers.

Also .... the KCS club is hoping that you will either bring musical donations to the Tune-Up or drop them off at the locations listed below. We are accepting strings, music, accessories, and even instruments until June 25th, for our fellow musicians in Cuba!
Pianist Simone Dinnerstein has created a relationship including a recording and a 2017 May-June tour on the east coast with the Havana Lyceum Orchestra. You can read more about them here: http://www.simonedinnerstein.com/home They will have a 3 day residency at National Orchestral Institute at theUniversity of Md where they will perform on June 28th. Their tour will represent the first time a Cuban orchestra of this size will have visited the US since the Castro revolution. Per Simone, the musicians are in their 20s and 30s and are of extraordinary dedication and caliber, however, they and their students lack the financial support to have instruments, music and accessories that they need, even to the extent that they have to tune to a lower pitch to prevent breaking the strings they have on their instruments. Because of this they would be very grateful to have any instruments, equipment especially strings, or music that we could gather from KCS to help them and their students.

Anssi Karttunen
Master Class
The Library of Congress and Mr Karttunen have graciously agreed to give a master class for the Kindler Society at the Kennedy Center. In addition to being one of the foremost performers active in commissioning and playing new music for the cello, Mr. Karttunen is also in great demand as a soloist in the standard repertoire, is an accomplished player of the baroque cello, and is one of the most thoughtful players on the circuit. You can read his full biography here . I am personally a fan of Mr. Karttunen's enthusiasm for new music and his ability to make it accessible to audiences.
The event is open free of charge to Kindler members and their friends. I will need a list of attendees, so please reply to [email protected] by midnight Wednesday with your name and the names of your guests so that I can put you all on the list.
Attendees must gather in front of the Eisenhower Theater in the Grand Foyer and we will go up as a group to the Rehearsal Room.
I look forward to seeing many of you there Saturday.
